The Long Gully Neighbourhood Centre often runs workshops, and many are at the Long Gully Community Garden. With my passion for gaining knowledge, and learning new skills, I attend workshops when possible.
In May, 2022, I participated in the pickled olives workshop, where I learnt how to pickle olives in a few different ways.
Pruning Workshop
Lee McDonald from McDonalds Nursery instructed participants on how to appropriately prune fruit trees for the colder months of the year.
Garden Work
The Long Gully Community Garden is open for a few hours, twice a week. It’s a great way to get my hands dirty, and come together as a community. I also love how it’s connected with nature, food systems, sustainability (they have a brilliant compost system), and it allows me to get some exercise in.
Tasks to do at the community garden can be anything from pruning, to composting, setting up garden beds, applying netting, and whatever you can think of doing in a garden setting.
Chatty Cafe
The Long Gully Neighbourhood Centre has many regular activities each week, including Chatty Cafe. Chatty Cafe is a way for people to come together with their craft projects, and work on them while they have a cuppa and chat away.
Some weeks, the neighbourhood centre invites special guests to present a particular topic or theme. One of the examples is when Cogho and Kylie from Triple M radio in Bendigo came to speak about how they got into radio, and what their radio show is all about, and specifically, the Let’s Chat – Mental Health Awareness program.
